LCL Patron Behavior Policy

Library Logo

PURPOSE:  This policy is intended to encourage behavior that supports the library’s goal of providing a safe environment.

Behavior becomes unacceptable when it interferes with this goal, compromises the rights of others, causes damage to the building/equipment, or causes injury to oneself or others.  Those willing to modify unacceptable behavior are always welcome to stay.  However, those unable to comply will be asked to leave and/or have library privileges revoked.  If necessary, the authorities will be called.

Parents/Guardians are responsible for the conduct and safety of persons under their care. Children who are under the age of ten must have a caregiver with them while visiting the library or attending a library-sponsored program. If a child under ten is found alone in the library, we will try to locate the caregiver. If we cannot find the caregiver, we may need to contact the police for assistance. If the safety or well-being of any child in the library is in jeopardy, library staff will call the police.

The patron may be held financially responsible if damage occurs to library property.

Examples of unacceptable library behavior include but are not limited to:

  • Illegal activity of any sort
  • Any perceived abuse towards staff or patrons will not be tolerated. This includes but is not limited to physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, or harassment.
  • Abandoning or leaving young children unattended
  • Excessive noise or any disruptive activity or behavior interfering with ordinary library use or operation
  • Possessing, consuming, or being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs
  • Smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, or any related tobacco use
  • Selling, soliciting, campaigning, or petitioning on library property
  • Abuse, vandalism, or misuse of books, other materials, equipment, or property
  • Bringing animals into the library (except service animals for the disabled)
  • Food and/or drinks without lids
  • Distribution or unauthorized posting of printed materials on library property
  • Inappropriate use of library computers and other electronic equipment, such as:
    • Damaging or altering electronic equipment, computer systems, or software
    • Displaying, printing, sending, or storing obscene, libelous, threatening, or harassing material
    • Violating copyright or trademark laws, software license agreements, or intellectual property rights
  • Skateboarding, roller skating, or any similar activity on library property
