Wastewater Department
The city of Lansing offers its citizens wastewater services as part of its utility package. Residents pay a monthly fee based on water usage during the months of December, January, February and March. Commercial and industrial clients pay their fee based on actual water usage each month.
The citizens of Lansing generate an average flow of 850,000 gallons of wastewater per day. The treatment facility also treats all the wastewater generated from the Lansing Correctional Facility, which is approximately 450,000 gallons per day.
To operate and maintain this utility, the Wastewater Utility Department employs seven full-time employees. The Wastewater Utility Department staff is a dedicated, professional, and committed team, who strive to protect public health and your environment while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
The department is responsible for the operations and maintenance of:
- Extended Aeration Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment Facility
- Collection system piping network
- Recycling of all biosolids generated from treatment
- Laboratory for wastewater testing
As a condition of employment, all department employees are required to maintain professional licenses and certifications from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Personnel become licensed operators through a combination of formal education and extensive on-the-job training.
Tours
Tours are available to school groups, civic organizations, or just curious citizens. Tours can be arranged by calling the Wastewater Utility Department during their normal business hours, or for a virtual tour check the bottom of this page.
