House Check Requests

Lansing Police Department provides house checks when possible for citizens who will be away from their homes for extended periods of time.  This is a community service offered in an effort to reduce the possibility of home intrusions while you are away from your home.   To request a house check complete a House Check Request Form and submit it to the police department.   The form is located at the bottom of this page for your convenience.

In addition, you may register your address with the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office.  This is a voluntary program for existing and new alarm systems and there is no fee to register.  The information provided could enable department dispatchers and law enforcement officers to respond more efficiently when an alarm call comes in.  To register your system, contact the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office at 913-758-4028.

Tips To Keep You Home Safe While On Vacation

1. Ask a friend or family member to keep an eye on your house while you are away and to contact the police department with any suspicious activity.
2. Do not share your traveling plans on social media, you never know who is reading the information.
3. Notify your local police department and request extra patrol while you are traveling.
4. Use lights to create the illusion that someone is home.  If possible, purchase a light switch timer that can turn your lights on and off automatically according to a programmed schedule.
5. Place a stop order on mail and newspapers or arrange to have a friend pick up your mail and newspapers.
6. Keep your yard maintained.  Ask a friend or pay a lawn-care service to care for your lawn while you are gone.
7. Leave a vehicle in the driveway, but don't forget to lock the vehicle.  Vehicles can serve as deterrent for a potential intruders.  
8. Lock up your valuables.
9. If you have a home security system or security cameras make them obvious to potential intruders and make sure your devices are programmed correctly and in good working order.  If you have a professionally monitored system contact the company and inform them you are going on vacation.
