Community and Economic Development Department
Lansing's Department of Community and Economic Development has a variety of roles in the local community. From overseeing building inspection, code enforcement, and planning and zoning to economic development, public information, events, and information technology for the City, this department has a diverse skill-set and a wide range of responsibilities.
Our Mission: Serve the residents of Lansing with creative, efficient, and affordable public services that enhance economic opportunity, build strong neighborhoods, and ensure a dynamic framework for high quality growth and development.
Our Vision: Continually foster the growth and prosperity of Lansing through extraordinary development practices and dedicated public service.
Economic Development: The department works to recruit new businesses to Lansing by attending trade shows and marketing the City to other attendees during trade shows, working with a consultant retail recruitment firm, and by reaching out to businesses that have been identified by the Council as well as the general public.
Community Development: The department provides community development services by providing building permits and inspection services, code enforcement, and planning and zoning services.
- We provide building permits and inspection services for everything from a water heater replacement to commercial construction of a new business, and everything in between.
- We work with the Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals to perform site plan reviews, zoning modifications, and conditional use permits as needed.
- We work to keep Lansing beautiful by enforcing codes throughout the City.
- We work to build community by holding events such as Independence Days, the Fall Festival, and other community events.
- We work to keep the community informed by performing public outreach via Channel 2 (available exclusively on Spectrum Cable) including broadcast of City Council meetings and other relevant government meetings, editing and creating a quarterly newsletter - the Lansing Connection - which is delivered to all residents in the City, managing social media for the City, and providing news releases as appropriate.
- We even provide oversight and management of the City's many computers and servers which are essential to the day-to-day operations of the City of Lansing.
