Citizens' Academy
What is the Citizens’ Academy?
The Citizens’ Academy provides an interactive way to learn about the workings of Lansing city government and gives participants insight into how the various city departments operate.
Sessions are led by representatives from City departments in an informal setting to educate about specific services by the City.
Occasionally sessions will include a facility tour. A graduation ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the Citizens’ Academy.
What is the cost?
There is no cost to participate in the Lansing Citizens’ Academy, but it does require a small time commitment.
What is expected of the participants?
In addition to attending all sessions, participants are expected to attend one City Council meeting. Participants need only to bring their enthusiasm and questions. Also, no more than two classes can be missed in order to graduate.
Who can participate?
Citizens’ Academy is open to interested Lansing residents, partners, and business owners. Participants must be high school age and older and cannot be running for or serving in an elected office. PLEASE NOTE: the class will be spending time in different work spaces across City facilities and as such MUST exercise good judgment and caution around heavy equipment and other tools and materials used by City employees.
Why should you participate in the Citizens’ Academy?
· You will learn about your city’s government, how it works, and how it impacts your neighborhood.
· You will be able to meet other active Lansing residents, city staff, and elected officials.
