Trash, Yard Waste, Recycling & Sewer Services
New residents of Lansing should come to City Hall at 800 First Terrace to set up trash, recycling and sewer service. A $75 deposit is required but is refundable after one year as long as the account is in good standing. The city offers automatic withdrawal from your bank account. Please provide a voided check to begin payment with this service.
Residents moving out of Lansing should contact City Hall at 913-727-3233 to close an account.
Monthly Statements
Sewer, Trash, Yard Waste and Recycling are all included in one statement. Statements are mailed around the 5th of the month and are due by the 25th of the month. If the balance is not paid by the 25th, a delinquent fee of 10 percent will be added.
Payments (cash, check or money order) can be mailed or placed in our drop box at City Hall, through the city website or can be called in directly. A convenience fee of 2.5% is applied to credit card payments.
The city also offers Automatic Payment Withdrawal. Payment withdrawals will be made between the 18th and 21st of each month. Please provide a voided check to begin payment with this service.
The city mails out quarterly delinquency notices. The city will assess the property tax rolls for property owners who have accounts that are 60 days delinquent or more. Renters with accounts that are 60 days delinquent or more will be submitted to a collection agency.
Curbside Trash Services
The city of Lansing contracts with Deffenbaugh Industries/Waste Management of Kansas, Inc. to provide solid waste disposal services using automated poly-carts which allow for more efficient service and a clean look for the city.
Trash, yard waste and recycling service has a combined monthly rate of $16.69, as of Feb. 2019. A discount for senior customers is available with proof of age. Call 913-727-3233 during regular business hours.
Lansing residents within the city limits receive a 95 gallon trash cart and a 65 gallon recycling cart with a yellow lid from Deffenbaugh/Waste Management. These carts MUST be used to ensure pick up. Get the requirements for successful collection.
Position your trash and recycling carts with the handles facing your house, side by side, and at least three feet apart and one foot from the curb. Trash must be placed in plastic bags inside the large black-lidded poly-cart. Any bags 33 gallons or smaller which do NOT fit inside the cart require overflow waste stickers, which are available for $1.25 each, or in sheets of 10 for $12.50.
Recycling Services
Lansing residents receive a 65 gallon recycling cart with a yellow lid from Deffenbaugh/Waste Management. Position your recycling cart with the handle facing the house at least three feet from your trash poly-cart and one foot from the curb.
All recyclables should be placed loosely inside the cart - NOT in bags.
Acceptable recyclables include newspaper, magazines, cereal boxes, soda cartons and plastics labeled with the numbers 1 through 7. For guidelines on acceptable recyclables, pleaser refer to the yellow lid on the recycling poly-cart, or to the Deffenbaugh residential website, or download a complete detailed list. Recycling amounts are unlimited, so any overflow can be placed next to the cart in containers that are clearly marked "recycling". No overflow tags are required.
Yard Debris
March 1 to August 31 - Residents can put up to twelve (12) containers / biodegradable bags or bundles of yard waste per week at the curb on the same side as the trash. Branches and tree limbs should be cut into lengths of four feet with a maximum diameter of four inches or less. Bundles should be tied with string or twine and not exceed 18 inches in diameter or 65 lbs. No dirt or rocks / stones permitted.

Bulky Item Pick Up
Residents are allowed one complimentary large item pick up per year, per house. Bulky items permitted for collection include:
- Small household appliances
- Washers
- Dryers
- Chairs
- Mattresses

Extra Pick Ups
Deffenbaugh/Waste Management will pick up six overflow bags on the pick up days following Independence Day and Christmas Day. Overflow stickers are NOT required on these bags on these days. Additionally, Deffenbaugh/Waste Management will pick up two Christmas trees per residence on the two pick-up dates following Christmas Day. Trees over 6 feet tall MUST be cut in half.

Overflow Waste Stickers can be purchased at City Hall, 800 First Terrace or by calling Deffenbaugh/Waste Management directly at 913-631-3300. The cost is $1.25 each, or you can purchase a sheet of ten for $12.50.
What Day is Trash, Yard Waste & Recycling Pick Up?
Thursday is the day residents are asked to have their trash, yard waste and recycling curbside by 7:00 am. Pick up times vary throughout the day. Trash, yard waste and recycling are each collected separately by Deffenbaugh/Waste Management.
Which Holidays Affect My Trash Service?
When the following holidays fall on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, pick up will be delayed to Friday of that week. Deffenbaugh/Waste Management observes New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
