Community Development

  • No permit is necessary from our office. Owner just needs to let Sheriff’s office know an alarm has been installed. Their number is 913-682-1313.

  • You don’t need a permit if you’re not replacing more than 25% of deck or fence. New decks and fences require a permit.

  • Call the Community & Economic Development Department at 913-727-2400.

  • You can apply for an Entity License online at http://permits.lansingks.org. Click on "Apply for a Trade License" if you're applying for an Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical business. If you're applying for any other non-trade business, click on "Apply for an Occupational License." The website explains what is needed for licensing, but if you have questions feel free to call Community & Economic Development at 913-727-2400.

  • Accessory structures are allowed on a property but cannot take up more than 30% of required rear yard space. Sheds under 120 Square Feet and less than 10 feet tall do not require a permit but must be located behind the rear building line of the principal building, and be no closer than 5 feet from the rear or side property line. Sheds larger than 120 Square Feet require a building permit, and must be located behind the front building line, be at least five feet from any side or rear property line but sheds providing garage access off a rear alley may be within three feet of the rear lot line, cannot be more than one and one-half stories, or no higher than the principal building, whichever is less, and be constructed with materials, architectural details and style, and roof forms that are compatible with the principal structure. Any accessory building not meeting the materials requirement must meet the setback requirements for the principal structure.

  • Any shed under 120sq. ft. or 10' in height does not require a permit unless you are going to put in electrical, plumbing, etc. The shed does, however, still need to be behind the rear building line of the principal building, and be no closer than 5 feet from the rear or side property line.
